Bill Callahan knows how to shut up the B-more crowd!

 

 
--> I have to talk about this miraculous occurrence that happened last Friday night. The miracle was: A man was able to sing with his guitar to a crowded outdoor crowd, and not one person talked while he sang! That’s right, not one person talked while he was performing! The man: Bill Callahan. The place: The area behind the Current Gallery. The event: Maryland Film Festival presents APOCALYPSE: A BILL CALLAHAN TOUR FILM with special guests Bill Callahan and director Hanly Banks! If you are not aware of Bill Callahan, you should acquaint yourself with this powerful songwriter with majestic low auto voice, who can make a large crowd stop and listen! Perhaps you are more aware of his band, SMOG. The night was beautiful with yummy bison tacos by the Golden West and beers by the Union Brewery! Catch a sweet performance here.

 

Loving this Band...even if its a bunch of damn hippies

So I say this in jest cause I know deep down I am a damn hippy myself. Knew that the day my grumpy old grand pa called them hippies those "no good for nothing long hairs" that we use to see in Hagerstown MD of all places back in the very early 70's....any who, I want to play my violin again in a collaborate band that has fun! This looks like a good place to start when finding new mentors. I can't get this song out of my head for the life of me, it just makes me feel so damn happy!

Melancholy Monday presents: Sonic Youth sing the Carpenters

I love this version...as a kid who actually owned most, if not all of the Carpenter's albums...as well as seeing them for my first concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion...this song seems to make my day today. Still hanging with this dreaded cold and feeling quite melancholy. enjoy....

Adventureland

So Mildred and I had a ladies night out with Indian Food and a good movie. We both graduated from Towson State in 1985...actually Mildred graduated a semester early in 1984....but we both ended up in the misery of artistic degrees...me, with a BS degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting...Mildred with a double major in English and Spanish...I believe her concentration was in Creative writing. Both of us having to move back home to horrible jobs in retail...Mildred did some time in the housewares department of the Hecht Company...me with a hipper Job at Kemp Mill Records that only lead to more retail jobs closer to the city so I could move out of my parents house.
So of course the movie of choice tonight was "Adventureland" .And yes I believe director Greg Mottola got 1987 right! He nailed the outcast poets returning to the homeland right...the job prospects.....and of course the awesome soundtrack. Check out the playlist here on The Playlist blog. My Summer Soundtrack...White Hinterland

You know how songs remind you of different times of your life and how wonderful those reminisce of sounds can bring memories full of emotion, smells, visions and events that roll around your head and bring big smiles(hopefully) I've been listening to Phylactery Factory, White Hinterland's debut album featuring 22-year-old Casey Dienel, who plays a nice combination of jazz and indie pop aesthetics. I kinda feel like I'm walking through the local Anthropology store as i listen to this.I've been listening to the entire CD for the past three days...and just can't get enough of it! Its a perfect listen for when those afternoon thunderstorms come around with its cloud covering and cool breezes! Take a listen to Dreaming of Plum Trees here.
